Through historical context, vivid storytelling, and archival imagery, this talk explores the indigenous roots of the Santa Cruz Vallery, the role of Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries and colonial settlement, the mission’s transformation through Mexican independence and U.S. territorial expansion, the preservation challenges and the modern meaning of Tumacácori as a symbol of cultural continuity and encounter.

BLUE HEALERS

Originally from the state of Washington and now based in San Diego, Blue Healers is a roots music trio who incorporate elements of blues and folk with aural landscapes. Don Forsyth is an innovative guitarist with deep blues influences and an unconventional expansive and expressive style. Diane Forsyth is a singer and bass playing songwriter with soul, folk, country and interstellar influences. Ric Lee is in high demand as a drummer throughout southern California. This concert will feature captivating originals, Bob Dylan and Tom Waits tunes, and other surprises along the way.


   

 

Blue Healers advanced to the semi-finals at the International Blues Challenge 2024 in Memphis Tennessee. Nominations include: Female Blues Vocal, Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Best solo/duo, Best New Act, Washington Blues Recording (Transmissions) Blues Songwriter and best blues band by the Seattle Weekly in 2009. They released the album Transmissions in 2023 and the EP Astro Blues in 2024.

TUCSON MODERN JAZZ QUARTET

The Tucson Modern Jazz Quartet aims to transcend one's understanding of jazz via a diverse sonic palette and an exploration of the shared characteristics of jazz in neighboring genres. Blending original compositions with forward-looking interpretations, the Tucson Modern Jazz Quartet pushes the boundaries of the jazz tradition with deep grooves, lush harmonies, and fearless improvisation.

 

The Tucson Modern Jazz Quartet features founder Keaton Wilson (keys, synthesizer), Zach White (percussion), Patrick Morris (bass), and Trey Bryant (saxophone) playing a mixture of original works as well as "non-standard" standards by the modern new guard (e.g. Robert Glasper, Dave Holland, and Kenny Garrett). 

 

Their new album, 8 Myths, is a vivid journey through eight evocative tracks—each one a sonic take on a different kind of myth, from folkloric funk to surreal electronic lo-fi soundscapes. The album melds modern jazz with elements of funk, fusion, and electronic sound design and features original compositions. Come celebrate a night of myth-making, music, and movement as the TMJQ brings their debut record to life.

Enjoy this evening of live music and narrated stories about this iconic supergroup.


The show features some of the finest singers and most well-versed musicians in the country including show creator Brian Chartrand (vocals/guitar), Josh Taylor (vocals/guitar), Holly Pyle (vocals), Lamar Gaines (keys), Mario Mendivil (bass), Adam Armijo (electric guitar), Todd Chuba (drums), and Miguel Melgoza (percussion).

This 2-day workshop will focus on beginning a pastel landscape painting with either a hard pastel plus alcohol wash or a watercolor underpainting. This allows the artist to complete the painting with strokes that achieve a much more looser style to their painting. We will choose subjects from a variety of pictures that I provide. This workshop will focus on the landscape with dramatic skies and how that sky is portrayed in water. This workshop is for beginner or intermediate pastel painters.

HEATHER HARDY’S MORE VIOLIN Featuring Scarlet Rivera

More Violin is a show to honor the beauty and significant contribution of the violin in music throughout the last 100 years. Throughout history the violin has been represented in all genres of music. From classical to jazz, blues to country, rock and roll to bluegrass, Cajun, Irish songs, and on and on. Heather and her band will take you on a journey through all these styles by performing iconic violin moments and introducing the audience to iconic violinists. Heather will be joined by the great violinist Scarlet Rivera who was made famous by her work with Bob Dylan. They will perform songs that span the violin repertoire, including some twin fiddle pieces, and of course some Bob Dylan songs. More Violin is a wonderful way to enjoy songs you love and to experience violin performances you may have never heard before. If you love the violin, you'll leave wanting more!

 

Violinist, composer, and activist Scarlet Rivera has toured extensively with Bob Dylan and performed as a soloist with the Duke Ellington Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Carnival of Venice, Italy. She has performed with many renowned artists including Emmylou Harris, Rufus Wainwright, Glen Hansard, Tracy Chapman, and most recently with Brandi Carlile at Disney Hall in 2019. Scarlet continues to be an active recording artist, performer, composer, and activist. 

 

Heather Hardy, known to many as "Lil' Mama" Hardy, is a celebrated blues violinist, singer, and songwriter. Her musical journey began early and she went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music. Her career took a different path when she began playing on the streets of Greenwich Village, where she discovered a passion for contemporary music and improvisation. In the mid-1980s, Hardy toured across the U.S. and Europe with the punk band The False Prophets. She later moved to Tucson, Arizona, and became a key member of the Sam Taylor Band, where her unique "wah-wah" solos on the violin helped the band win the 1995 Arizona Blues Showdown. In 1997, she formed her own group, the Lil' Mama Band. Her talent has been recognized with induction into both the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Tucson Musicians Museum in 2016.

Grace Field, a Broadway performer now silver screen actress recently seen performing on NBC's The Today Show with Hugh Jackman, is a proud member of Grammy nominated and Tony Award Winning Broadway Inspirational Voices who has performed across the globe. Recently, she performed on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre in "Disney on Broadway" as part of the Celebration of Disney's 25 years streamed on ABC hosted by Whoopi Goldberg. Also, Field performed in the original cast of the new Alan Menken's Disney's production of Hercules at the Public Theatre. Ms. Field has also performed at venues including The White House, Broadway's New Victory Theatre, The Apollo, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The United Nations, The Barclay Center, New World Stages and Carnegie Hall. Grace just performed at Carnegie Hall in the presentation of The Songs of Dorothy Dandridge the Musical directed by Tamara Tunie. She also recently had the great honor of performing at The White House for the President, Vice President, and distinguished guests (performance featured on PBS). Currently, she is developing and starring in the feature film "Jessie" with Oscar nominated writer and producer Leigh Savidge (Straight Outta Compton). Field also has the honor of performing the role of Marilyn Monroe in a Broadway development entitled "That's Love."

Dorsten, comprised of siblings Sophie and Alex, is a Folk/Americana band with a dynamic stage presence and out of this world vocals, balanced perfectly with complex and beautiful instrumentation. With a trail of accolades and a growing international fanbase, they continue to craft music that resonates deeply while leaving an indelible mark on the modern music landscape. With influences such as The Lumineers and Florence + The Machine, they have spent years honing their craft while captivating audiences on national tours and music festivals including Summerfest and Edmonton Folk Music Festival. Recently having returned from a 17-city European tour with Tom Walker in Paris, these Arizona based artists have opened for Beth Hart on her tour of Canada, as well as Mark Ambor on his tour throughout the U.S. and Europe. Dorsten will be returning to Europe once again this season for dozens of dates. 

 

Sophie was a long time staff member at Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock teen center and sang backup vocals on his album “Rock for Children”. In 2023, Dorsten released an Alice Cooper cover “I Can Never Cry” which received rave reviews from Cooper himself. Most recently, Sophie advanced to Hollywood week on this season's American Idol!
